I think this is the end of week 3 of my kitchen reno, but I’m not entirely sure. My daughter and I have sort of settled into a “new normal” routine at home, especially with temporary food prep in the hall. Time is sort of a blur at this point and we’ve adapted to the disruption.
My contractor has started replacing the subfloor to level and soundproof it — no more pitch and no more creaks! I believe that once the flooring is done, the rest of the reno will start moving more quickly.
I’m ridiculously happy with this guy so far, which is saying something. He’s like the unicorn of contractors. Last week I picked up donuts for him and his employee, and next week I am going to order pizza for them. I am perfectly happy letting them set their own hours and come and go as they need to — I feel like it provides a happy and supportive work environment.
I wouldn’t do this for just anyone, but this guy I trust. He’s conscientious and not the type to take advantage. And believe me, I have a radar for these things — I know bullshit when I see it.
Anyway, so, this weekend we’re celebrating my daughter’s birthday, the first without my dad. I ordered a small cake and some cupcakes from a local bakery, and we’re getting BBQ takeout at my daughter’s request — wings, brisket, baked beans, mac ‘n cheese, mashed potatoes, fries. (Two types of potatoes because we are potato people.)
I still have moments where I forget myself and have the impulse to call my dad and update him on what’s happening.
